The Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions

The museum of arts and popular traditions imageAllows you to discover, through everyday objects , the two main communities on the Island of Djerba the Muslim community and the Jewish comunity.

The museum displays a fine collection of costumes, jewellery, Jews and Muslims, Quran boxes, pottery, Cenotaph (empty tomb erected in memory of a person) and the reconstruction of a pottery workshop. It gives rich explanations of the museum objects so you can immerse visitors can immerse themselves in history, custom and traditions of Jerbans. The museum is housed in a formera zaoui'a (Koranic education center) dating from the eighteenth century. It was originally intended to house the tombs of two marabout, Sidi Zitouni and Sidi Ameur.

The complex is integrated into a reconstituted village Jerba: streets and alleys, porches and arcades, walkways, shady squares and café terraces, reminiscent of the urban typical of Djerba, whose inhabitants have always welcomed newcomers. No particular style, but rather mixed architectural styles of the country, the village is designed as a meeting place, around a central plaza lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. Life revolves around the magnificent museum Hadria Lalla, a circuit based on the discovery Jerba Heritage and more onthis amazing piece of land, it also is home to the largest crocodile farm in the Mediterranean. Everything in the middle the mixing of vegetation of the region and the far reaches of the desert.

The Lalla Hadria Museum Djerba Explore

Located in the grounds of Parc Djerba explore this impressive new collection of over 1,000 pieces, the richest of its kind in the country, demonstrates the influence of Islamic art from the Mediterranean to the borders of Asia. Masterpieces of calligraphy and miniature manifestations of the sacred, precious jewels and antique doors, ceramics and pottery have been collected with passion throughout the world. Two main sections: one devoted to the entire Arab and Islamic cultures and the other arts to Tunisia. Through the fifteen rooms or galleries soberly furnished, among other things visitors can admire the shiny tiles of Kashan, parchment Quran Kairouan, fragments of the curtain of the Kaaba and the banners of silver and silk of mystical brotherhoods, glazed pottery Tunisia and the superb collection of costume jewellery.

Crocodile Farm

An imposing fortress architecture evoking the desert marks the entrance to the animal park. To the sound of African music that is guided towards the pools and the greenhouse where tropical swimming - or rather, laze in the sun-400 Nile crocodiles, brought from Madagascar. The Nile crocodile is one of the largest species of crocodilian, it can achieve, for some males, up to 7 feet and weighs nearly a ton. Its morphology is one of the most formidable species.

Djerba Heritage

Djerba Heritage is an invitation to discover the customs, crafts and home to the island. In menzel brilliantly recreated in the middle of an orchard, with its gardens surrounded by hedges of land planted with cacti and aloe, the dwelling house, has a closed architecture on the outside. The openings are discrete, thick walls and well designed spaces. El Griba

The oldest synagogue in the world would have been built in the 5th century BC by Jews fleeing the destruction of the Temple of Solomon, and seek refuge from Djerba and is the largest synagogue in Tunisia and the second largest after a one in Jerusalem. The jewish synagogue hold the oldest legislation Judaism and would house a relic of the Temple of Jerusalem. Therefore, it is nicknamed "the antechamber of Jerusalem.  The Ghriba is the symbol of Jewish and Muslim communities living together in harmony.

Besides the three hundred mosques and two churches in Djerba, the beautiful jewish synagogue, located in the village of Er-Riadh (Hara formerly Seghira) 9 km south of Houmt Souk.

The present synagogue is newly built and very impressive square, brilliantly white and upright among olive groves. To access, must first go to the control and the enclosure is protected by the military, following an attack a few years ago

The Jewish Pilgrimage in Islam: Each year in May, the El Ghriba synagogue hosts many pilgrims, nearly 4,000 Jews from around the world to pay tribute to this great place of Jewish worship.

To visit the synagogue, men and women must be properly dressed.  A djellaba and a scarf can be loaned to the entrance.  Then you can discover the lavish decorations and religious relics of inestimable value (as one of the oldest Torah in the world).
